The artist to whom this vase is attributed (the Painter of Vatican 309) was a close companion of Lydos, a major mid-sixth century B.C. artist. The workshop in which they decorated their vases was prolific, and included the last group of Attic artists who painted large vases solely in the animal style. (G. D. Scott, III, 2002)
