On this vase a young man offers a flower to a seated hetaira, or prostitute. Hetairai, skilled as entertainers, were often hired to accompany men at symposia. In his left hand the young man holds a coin purse which he will presumably use to pay the hetaira. The mirror on the wall indicates that the scene take place in the hetaira’s quarters. The elegant composition and fine drawing are typical of the Berlin Painter, one of the outstanding vase-painters of the 5th century B.C. (Jessica Powers 2008)
