Label Text
Achilles loaned his armor to his companion Patroclus, who entered the battle against the Trojans but was killed by the Trojan prince Hector. Achilles, overcome with grief, returned to the fray and killed Hector in turn. On this vase the distraught Achilles is depicted dragging Hector’s corpse around the tomb of Patroclus. Achilles’ desecration of Hector’s body and his eventual agreement to return the corpse to Priam, Hector’s father, are described in Book 24 of Homer’s Iliad.
