The walls of Roman houses and shops were typically built of stone or brick that was covered with plaster and painted. The wall paintings were executed in the fresco technique, in which the pigment was applied while the plaster was still wet and bonded to the plaster as it dried. As these two fragments demonstrate, the wall paintings were executed in a range of colors from vivid reds to delicate pastels. The painters were capable of subtle modeling, as in the veiled woman’s face, but also often worked in the appealing, sketch-like manner apparent in Psyche’s face and garments.
