Label Text
This cup is carved out from a jade pebble and has a shape similar to an ancient bronze gui food vessel. Jade has long been a treasured stone since the Confucius time up till today. Its physical properties of hardness, smoothness, and resonance when struck were compared to gentlemanly virtues—rectitude, humbleness, and being able to maintain one’s principles even under unfavorable conditions. Small jade vessels like this piece were favorite objects in the scholar’s studio for gracing a desk or a bookshelf.
