Label TextGlistening effects of light on water animate this scene of fishermen busily working in a southern French port, probably near Marseilles.Charles-François de Lacroix made his living painting marine pictures like this. He emulated his teacher, Joseph Vernet, who created a vogue for patriotic images of the ports of France. Lacroix began with observation of nature, shown by his attention to atmosphere, then altered his compositions in the studio to conform to the current academic landscape conventions. He typically framed his harbors with curving bluffs at left and right, dividing the seascape into distinct spatial zones. The woman reclining at left, wearing a white blouse and eye-catching red skirt, is a recurring figure in Lacroix’s paintings.
