Sides A and B: Pyrrhic dancer and flutist
On both sides of this vase, a pyrrhic, or armed, dancer practices to the music of a flutist. The armed dance was one of the competitions at the Panathenaic festival, an important festival of Athena held annually in Athens. The dancer, wearing a helmet and greaves and carrying a spear and shield, stands in a pose that may have been a required component of the dance. (Jessica Powers 2008)
