Escudos de monja were devotional badges often worn by Conceptionist and Jeronymite nuns in New Spain. These badges depicted the wearers’ favored devotions of the Virgin Mary. These delicately crafted and painted objects originated as a loophole around the reforms that banned the wearing of devotional ornaments made of luxury materials. The subject of this badge is the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, who is surrounded by (clockwise from top left): the Holy Trinity, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Pasqual, Saint Luke the Evangelist, Saint Francis of Assisi, Joseph and the Christ Child, and the Archangel Michael.
