This painting of the Sorrowful Mother shows the grieving mother of Christ with a dagger in her heart. In some paintings of the same image, seven daggers enter her heart, the first symbolizing her agony over the circumcision of her son, and the last standing for her sadness over his crucifixion. The smaller figure on the bottom right is a portrait of the patron who commissioned this painting and represents a thanksgiving for a favor received or, simply, his continuing devotion.
