The earliest sculpture in the Nile Valley appeared during the Predynastic Period, when ancient Egyptian culture was in its formative stages. Stone working at this time included shaping tools, weapons, and ritual objects of flint (chert); creating palettes and pectorals of slate; and sculpting amulets and figurines of various materials including carnelian and ivory.
