This painting of Saint Francis embracing the Christ Child shows strong characteristics of the Mexican Baroque style. The opulent foliage framing the central figures, as well as the crown of heavenly putti, were devices common to that period. Note the wounds (stigmata) on the hands of Saint Francis, a reference to his miraculous acquisition of the wounds of Christ during a period of intense meditation. (Marion Oettinger, 1998)
