Our Lady of Mount Carmel is typically depicted holding the Christ Child in one arm and two scapulars in her hand. Scapulars are symbols of devotion and penance normally worn in pairs, one in front and one in back. They were frequently used by the Carmelite Order to illustrate those presented by the Virgin in 1251 to an Englished Carmelite named Simon Stock. The Carmelite Order was important in colonial Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Images of Our Lady sometimes include her offering scapulars to souls in purgatory, thus assisting in their salvation.
