The art of paper cutting has a long history in Europe and was brought to New Spain as early as the seventeenth century. This amazingly executed chalice cover, with its central figure of the "Lamb of God," symbolizing the Holy Eucharist, was probably made in a convent. The delicately cut paper design was laid down over a silk field to great affect. (Marion Oettinger, 1998)
