Images of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception are intended to illustrate the purity of the Virgin Mary. It is based on the Mother of God and from the Revelation of St. John in the New Testament. The serpent beneath Mary's foot symbolizes her role as a second Eve, beginning a new generation of humankind that is redeemed from sin. Her image is widespread throughout Christendom. In Ecuador, she is among the most important representations of the Mother of Christ.
