DescriptionWhite cotton huipil decorated with red embriodery; images of birds, flowers, and two horizontal motifs at the bottom of the garment. The front of the garment features the embroidered phrases "Republica Mexicana" and "Estado de Oaxaca."Label TextHuipiles are rectangular blouses that are commonly worn by Indigenous women of Mexico and Central America. They predate the Spanish colonization of Mesoamerica, and their design varies widely by region. The huipil seen here represents the embroidery style of the Ixcatec community, based in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Oaxaca has eighteen federally recognized Indigenous groups, each with its own textile traditions.(LA, 2020)Exhibition HistoryCon Cariño: Mexican Folk Art from the Collection of the San Antonio Museum Association (San Antonio Museum of Art), 1986.
