Combining a deep passion for the majestic landscape of the American West, devotion to precision and sharpness, and meticulous craftsmanship as a printer, Ansel Adams produced a striking image of Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome mountain. Along with contemporaries Imogen Cunningham (American, 1883–1976) and Edward Weston (American, 1886–1958), Adams founded the group f/64, devoted to what they termed “straight photography,” as opposed to staged or embellished images. Director of the Sierra Club for thirty-seven years, Adams was also pivotal in the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Photography. (Suzanne Weaver, 2019)
