Agustin de Iturbide, a major figure in Mexico's fight for independence from Spain, was made head of the new country in 1822 and almost immediately declared himself Emperor Agustin I of Mexico. Within one year, his rule was met with strong opposition, and he was forced into exile. Later, while attempting to return to Mexico, Iturbide was captured and executed. Very little is known about the painter Felix Zarate, but he appears to have been an early nineteenth century regional painter from the State of Jalisco.
