"Matracas" such as this were used during Holy Week in nineteenth century Mexico. On Good Friday, the day Christ was crucified, the Catholic Church prohibits the ringing of church bells. Noisemakers, some of wood, others of metal, are used to announce mass. Small noisemakers, such as this, were bought by wealthy Mexicans and given as Easter gifts. (Marion Oettinger, 1998)
