Label Text
The mythological wrestling match of Atalanta and Peleus, depicted on both sides of this cup, was part of the funeral games in honor of Pelias, the king of Iolkos. Atalanta, with white skin, is at left; Peleus, nude and bearded, is at right. Two men who may be judges flank the wrestlers. Beneath the figures on each side of the vase is a nonsense inscription, an indication that the cup was destined for non-Greek consumers, probably in Etruria. (Jessica Powers 2008)
