Mummy masks of the Ptolemaic Period remained clearly within ancient Egyptian artistic traditions. With the Roman conquest of Egypt in the latter part of the first century B.C., Greek and Roman influences begin to appear with greater frequency. Naturalistic, three-dimensional stucco portrait masks and panel portraits often covered the face of the mummy instead of the more traditional, stylized mummy mask. The stucco examples were realistically painted and many have life-like inlaid eyes of glass or stone. (Gerry Scott, 2002)
