Label Text
From pre-classic times forward, a special class of merchants, known as "pochteca" among the Aztec, carried luxury goods all over Mesoamerica. During the post-classic period, they usually painted themselves black and wore special hair arrangements. This seated male, burnished black with a basket on his back, may well represent a member of that merchant class. Notice the objects of personal adornment. (Marion Oettinger, 1998)
