DescriptionMiniature polychrome vessel with red slip and black and yellow paint. Geometric designs.Label TextPolychromed vessels, or those painted with three or more colors, was an important good in the Mexica (Aztec) Empire, because much of it came from the Mixtec-Puebla region south of Mexico City. This speaks to the long-distance trade and political networks of the time. The function of miniature vessels like this one is unclear, however. In some parts of Mesoamerica, they are found in burial contexts, but there too the reason for their inclusion is not clear. (Bernadette Cap, 2022)Provenancewith Mrs. A. A.
