DescriptionRed and blue painted stucco remains on a portion of the vessel exterior. Brown-slip present below and on exterior of rest of bowl. Band of incised pseudoglyph-like designs on exterior below the rim. Below this are vertical gouge-incised lines that extend to the base of the vessel.Label TextThis Early Classic vessel provides an excellent example of pseudoglyphs, located in the band just below its rim. Pseudoglyphs mimicked the use of imagery, shapes, and arrangment of Maya writing, but are unreadable themselves. This type of emulation would likley demonstrate the owner's links to an elite status, but probably not among the highest ranking elites. The latter would have been able to read and had access to litterate artisans. Another interesting aspect of this vessel is the presence of painted stucco on the fluted portion of its body (not shown here), which is not common to this type of vessel. This could be an indication that the vessel was an heirloom re-used at a later time.
