Label Text"Dreams are a mystery, taking us to the hazy,
intuitive place between the conscious and the
unconscious."
"I've been in a dream group for fifteen years.
I've been using dreams for a while now and
base a lot of my decisions on them. . . . I've
been dreaming about jewelry quite a bit."
Linda Pace
In order to remember her dreams, Pace recorded them in writing in a journal shortly after waking, and then made drawings of images remembered from the dream. This ovoid form, which at face value appears to be a necklace, may also be interpreted on deeper levels, a practice that Pace was accustomed to as a regular participant in gatherings of friends who analyzed their dreams as a group. The image in the drawing may suggest many things besides a necklace, such as the opening of a vagina during a sexual encounter or the act of giving birth, as well as a surgical incision with stitching all around it. The latter idea is relevant to the artist's situation at the time she made the drawing, in that she had recently entered into a struggle with the cancer that took her life.
In addition to her role as an artist, Pace was an important collector and philanthropic patron of the arts. In 1995, she founded ArtPace, San Antonio's distinguished artist-in-residency and exhibition program that provides our city with ongoing exposure to new and experimental art from all over the world.
