Insect, or ant traps, as they were more frequently called, were a common household item. Made in the form of a small, flat dish with an inner cup, they were sold in sets of four. After the legs of a table or food safe had been placed within the inner cups, water or kerosene was poured into the outer circular cavity to discourage insects from crawling up the legs of the piece of furniture.
