Label Text
Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) was from a wealthy and well-respected Creole family in Caracas. Educated in the principles of the European enlightenment, Bolivar became the leader of the South American independence from Spain. In the decades immediately following the independence from Latin American republics, portraits such as this could be found all over northern South America, honoring the Liberator and visually reminding the public of the sacrifices and accomplishments of those who fought with him.
