This autumnal scene of rural Staten Island is one of a series of paintings all using similar viewpoints that Julian Onderdonk made around 1908. Intensely interested in the ways that the same setting can change due to slight shifts in light, weather, atmosphere, time of day, or angle of view, Onderdonk often chose one location to explore in an extended series. He continued this practice upon returning to San Antonio after 1912, especially in his hill country scenes of bluebonnet paintings.
