Although the setting of this painting is unknown, it likely represents a scene around Saratoga, New York, a fashionable resort during the nineteenth-century. In this period, artists became curious about the changing landscape around them and patrons began to collect scenes that showed popular tourist destinations such as Saratoga. This taste permeated all levels of the art world from famous practitioners who became artistic celebrities to more obscure artists like this one. Although their skills may not have been as accomplished as their better-known colleagues, such anonymous artists nevertheless produced charming images of the American landscape.
