The dramatic diagonal line of the woman’s rebozo (shawl) and contrast between the dark garment and the pale background emphasizes geometric and abstract elements in this image. Manuel Carrillo’s photographs reflect this type of modernist approach to form and composition and, at times, display inventive camera angles. He began taking photographs at age forty-nine and focused on Mexico’s rural communities. The embrace of Indigenous culture that developed in the 1920s after the Mexican Revolution was a way to reframe national identity.
