Label Text
Peering through a round aperture in a tiled wall, a young woman stands on tiptoe with her back to the camera. This type of dreamlike image and enigmatic narrative is characteristic of Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s photography. He came to prominence in the post-Revolutionary milieu of Mexico City, where artists and intellectuals reframed Mexican identity by embracing avant-garde and Indigenous aesthetics. The act of looking, reflective of the medium of photography itself, is often the subject of Álvarez Bravo’s work.
