Label Text
Organic plant materials such as copal would been placed in this vessel and burned during religious ceremonies. It most likely originally had a lid from which the smoke would be emiited. The being depicted in the elaborate applique work on the front of the vessel may be the Maya diety Chaak who was a patron of rain and its fundamental role in the success of an agricultural lifeway.
