Earthenware vessels from West Mexican cultures have received less study than the well-known naturalistic earthenware figurines from this area. The vessel shown here is complexly made and designed compared to others. Below the red, yellow, and blue paint may be a thin coat of stucco which helps to create the vibrant colors seen here. On most other types of vessels from the region, the pigment was applied directly to the clay. The significance of the designs painted on the vessels is unknown. (Bernadette Cap, 2022)
