Label Text
The work depicted in this photograph, by Máximo Pacheco (1907–1992), is likely a study for a mural. Pacheco, Diego Rivera (1886–1957), and José Clemente Orozco (1883–1949) were among the noted artists in the same social circle as Tina Modotti; all commissioned the photographer to document their mural commissions. Pacheco, like his contemporaries, including Modotti, was immersed in the political fervor of the day, which informed his subject matter. In 1926, when Modotti’s partner, Edward Weston, left Mexico, she joined the Communist party and her photographs became more political. Due to her affiliations with the party, in 1930, she was expelled from Mexico. After her expulsion, she gave up photography.
