DescriptionWhite frame. Colorful cut paper. On left side there is a rainbow like half arch with several handles and arms emerging from the colors. On the right side there is a large head blowing fire from its mouth (the head is comprised of hundreds of eye balls). At the bottom there are layers of cut paper to look like grass.Label Text"As for paper…I'm attracted to its openness as a material. It can be cut folded, ripped, etc. to create endless textures. It also has this suggested sense of the ephemeral, but can be very strong and enduring. And there is this long history with paper and storytelling that I'm attracted to."
- Michael Velliquette
Velliquette's collages are made entirely from paper and glue. Working with cut-up fragments from sheets of archival multicolored paper stock, Velliquette builds fanciful narrative tales, with the imagery often suggesting imagined myths, allegories, or fairytales. A compulsive "tinkerer," the artist regularly spends long hours of concentrated studio time, obsessively arranging his materials until a composition is spontaneously "discovered" through the direct engagement with his materials.
