This work is a replica of an original painting made in 1555 by Alonso de Narváez that is arguably the most famous religious image in Colombia. The original currently hangs in the Basilica of Chiquinquirá, located in the state of Boyacá, Colombia. The painting depicts the Virgin of the Rosary standing upon a crescent moon and looking down at the Christ Child cradled in her left arm. The saint on the left, thought to be Saint Anthony of Padua, holds a votive image of the Christ Child in his left hand. The saint on the right, considered to be Saint Andrew, holds a diagonal cross in his left arm and reads the Book of Gospels in his right hand. Like the original work, this eighteenth-century reproduction has embellishments attached to the canvas.
