DescriptionThis clay sculpture portrays a human with a hunched back in a crouched position. An undecorated, open vessel rests on the right shoulder and is supported by the right arm. The left arm is arched with the left hand resting on the left knee. The right shin bone protrudes from the leg. No indications of clothing are present but the individual is wearing circular earrings.Label TextThis figure is of a style common to the West Mexican shaft tomb cultures, possibly those in the Jalisco area. Within several Mesoamerican cultures, persons with unique body structures were part of the palace retinue and may have been ritual specialists. Figurines akin to this one have been recovered from burials. They may have been placed in tombs to serve as guides or company for the deceased. (Bernadette Cap, 2020)Provenancewith Mrs. A. A.
