Iznik (the ancient city of Nicea) in western Turkey became the pottery center of the Ottoman Empire. A dish such as this was made for normal use and is decorated with a variety of garden plants springing from the ground. The use of thickly applied red slip known as Armenian bole was characteristic of late Iznik ware. The exterior is decorated with spots of blue and green.
