(Jessica Powers 2008)
Side A: Harnessing of a chariot
Side B: Departure of a warrior
The broad panels of this exceptionally large krater depict the preparation of a heroic warrior's departure for battle. The subject on the principal side shows the harnessing of the warrior's chariot, in the company of his household. The warrior is unidentified, but may be intended to represent a legendary figure such as Hector, from the Trojan War Cycle, or Amphiaraos, one of the Seven Against Thebes. Present for the leave-taking are his elderly, bald father and his wife, who holds their infant son. (Previous Label Text)
