Kava or 'ava is the Tongan name of the Piper methysticum plant and the mildly mood-altering drink that was obtained by mixing the pounded or chewed root with water. It was consumed with great ceremony by priests prior to entering a religious trance. It was ritually consumed at all ceremonial events.
