Using the familiar format and candid language of parking signs, Edgar Heap of Birds confronts the memory of the Trail of Tears. The work references the 1830 Indian Removal Act, which sanctioned the forcible removal of 100,000 Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole peoples from their ancestral lands, resulting in devastating loss of human life and heritage. The artist describes walking as an “instrument of torture perpetuated upon many tribal peoples as the United States inflicted brutal removal policies.” Here, the artist asks the viewer to stop and consider the past’s ongoing impact. 

Utilizando el cándido y familiar lenguaje de los señalamientos de estacionamiento, Edgar Heap of Birds confronta la memoria del Sendero de Lágrimas. La obra hace referencias a la Ley de Traslado Forzoso de los Indios, la cual autorizó la expulsión forzosa de 100,000 Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw y Seminoles de sus tierras ancestrales resultando en una devastadora pérdida de vidas y herencia cultural. El artista describe el acto de caminar como “un instrumento de tortura perpetuado en contra de muchas de los miembros de las tribus cuando los Estados Unidos infligió sus brutales políticas de expulsión forzada.” Aquí, el artista pide al espectador que pare y considere el contínuo impacto del pasado en el ahora.
