This royal calabash bowl was formerly owned by King Kalakaua, the last king and penultimate monarch of the Hawaiian Islands. His reign from 1874-1891 marked an era of dramatic transition in the cultural, economic, and political life of the Hawaiian people. It was during this period that large-scale plantation farming of sugar and pineapple for the American market commenced. This resulted in permanent changes to the landscape of the islands and to the political and economic fortunes of both native Hawaiians and emigrant populations.
