Like the Archangel Michael, Saint Raphael is usually depicted in the military costume of the Roman Army. He is also frequently shown, as here, in a pilgrim's cape and staff with gourd. He is patron of safe journeys and a guardian against eye ailments. According to tradition, he helped restore the eyesight of the father of Tobias by applying a fish gall. For that reason, he is often depicted holding a fish in one hand. (Marion Oettinger, 1998)
