The dramatic camera angle in this image emphasizes abstract elements such as the geometric grid of stone tiles and the organic form created by the mother’s enveloping rebozo (shawl). Manuel Carrillo’s photographs reflect this type of modernist approach to form and composition. He began taking photographs at age forty-nine and focused on Mexico’s rural Indigenous communities.
