This figurine is of a style known to the Jalisco region of Mexico. Well-known to this region are subterrean (shaft) tombs where figurines like this one were placed along with other figures and often many earthenware vessels. The significance of the figures inclusion in the tombs is unclear, but they offer a glimpse into the dress and activities of the past. On this figure's face is black paint which may represent scars or face paint which provides insight into the marking of personal identity. (Bernadette Cap, 2022)
