George Inness
George Inness was born in Newburgh, New York, and grew up in Hewark, New Jersey, where he studied under John Jessee Baker. He later studied in Brooklyn with French landscapist Regis Francois Gignoux. Although greatly influenced by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon painters, his interest in the subtle moods of landscapes places him squarely in the company of the tonalists of the late nineteenth century. Inness became one of the most influential landscape painters in America during the late nineteenth century.
