DescriptionThe top of the lamp is decorated with a stylized frog in relief, with ridges flanked by volutes in place of its head between the fill hole and nozzle. The clay is a pale buff color with red inclusions. A maker's mark is incised into base: alpha.Label TextGroup label with 2012.25.1 and 2012.25.4: Lamps decorated with frogs were popular in Egypt in the third and fourth centuries A.D. On some lamps of this period, the frog was depicted only in part, or replaced altogether by palm branches.
