DescriptionRaised ring around outside of discus; flange at each side of shoulder; grooves radiating outward from discus on shoulder between flanges; volutes at either side of nozzle top, which has a flat upper surface. Reddish clay with black slip (or discoloration?). Applied base ring; no maker's mark. Mold made.Label TextOil lamps in a great variety of shapes, made from clay, metal, or glass, were used throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. In addition to serving as a source of artificial light, they were also dedicated to the gods as votive offerings and deposited in tombs.
