DescriptionTwo young girls hugging each other and looking at the viewer.Label TextDepicted in an embrace and surrounded by hearts, these ‘primas’ (cousins) are the artist’s daughter and niece. The strength of their familial bond is mirrored in the braided hair, which has been cut—perhaps signifying the young girls’ independence or a departure from traditional values and customs. Barbara Carrasco was born in El Paso, Texas, and grew up in Los Angeles where she became an activist. For fifteen years, she designed banners and signs for the United Farm Workers union, working closely with César Chávez and Dolores Huerta. (LSM, 2024)
