DescriptionThis print portrays a young girl, from the Miao ethnic group in Guizhou province southwest of China, sitting in a frontal pose with a contemplative look. She wears an elaborate silver headdress decorated with floral and fauna motifs. A large necklace composed of rings and rounded pendants matches the headdress as a complete set of typical Miao jewelry worn by women for important or celebratory occasions. The high realism of this piece also reveals the details of this young girl’s dress—embroidered dragons on the sleeves and floral-shaped silver buttons. Sunlight, highlighting the girl’s lips, nose and cheeks, is in contrast to the shadow of the headdress on her forehead, covering her piercing eyes.SignedZhu Jianxiang 2007.1
