Set amidst a dramatic seascape, this portrait evokes Botticelli’s Birth of Venus (ca. 1484). Rodríguez-Díaz references the myth of Venus, but also questions the ideal of beauty it has perpetuated in the canon of art history. The sitter, a friend of the artist named Australia Marte, stands with arms crossed against her chest, a pose that alludes to the Venus Pudica (modest Venus) tradition in Western art seen in Botticelli’s painting and Rubens’s The Little Fur (1635). The more realistic depiction of women’s bodies celebrated in Baroque painting, such as Rubens’s, was also an inspiration for the artist.
